Derek Jeter hot on heels of Lou Gehrig’s Yankee hits record
Derek Jeter had two more hits Sunday and is now 12 shy of breaking Lou Gehrig’s club record of 2,721. Jeter was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, pushing his average to .335.
Joe Girardi said he would not manipulate Jeter’s playing time on the Yanks’ seven-game road trip to ensure that Jeter breaks Gehrig’s mark at home. The Yankees play three games in Baltimore beginning Monday and then play four in Toronto before their next home game, a doubleheader against the Rays on Sept. 7.
“No, I won’t,” Girardi said. “The important thing is for us to win games. Jeter’s always been all about winning, doing what it takes. Nothing about his numbers, but wins.”

Pitching key for Yanks down stretch
While talking to a group of reporters on Tuesday afternoon, Derek Jeter suddenly realized each inquiry about the first-place Yankees could be summed up with one universal answer.
“People make such a big deal out of the home runs being hit [at the new Yankee Stadium], but our pitching staff’s been doing a pretty good job. So, once again, it all boils down to pitching.”
That leaves Wednesday’s game in the hands of veteran Andy Pettitte, who will toe the rubber opposite Rangers rookie Derek Holland.

CC pitches in for hometown school
Imagine walking through the doors of your elementary school for the first day of classes and being greeted by a Major League player, offering you a new backpack to begin the year.
That was the memorable experience for approximately 500 students on Wednesday at the Loma Vista Elementary School in Vallejo, Calif., as Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia returned to the hallways he once roamed and offered to pitch in for his hometown.
“It was fun going back,” Sabathia said. “There’s a few teachers who are still there from when I was there. It was fun to go there and talk to the kids, and hang out for a while and give them some school supplies. Everyone was a little antsy.”

Yanks add depth by acquiring Gaudin
NEW YORK — Poll the Yankees, and they’ll tell you the most significant difference between now and June, between winning and losing, has been their bullpen. And the biggest difference in their bullpen has been the success of Phil Hughes and Alfredo Aceves.
Problem is, having Hughes and Aceves pitch in relief has drained much of the starting pitching depth from their system. And so the Yankees made a move to address that Thursday, acquiring right-handed starter Chad Gaudin from the Padres for a player to be named later.
Gaudin will not immediately assume the fifth starter’s role, but his presence suggests that the struggling Sergio Mitre’s job is not safe. He should join the Yankees at some point during this weekend’s series against the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. “I was surprised, but it’s not the first time it’s happened to me,” Gaudin said. “I’m excited to go to New York. I love to win, and that’s what they do.”

Skid over as Yanks lambaste Sox
NEW YORK — The last time the Yankees had gone this deep into a season without being able to beat the Red Sox, they answered to the “Highlanders” and played home games at Hilltop Park.
It made for a fascinating history lesson, but the Bombers could head home on Thursday knowing they’d put an end to all the questions about losing time and time again to their classic blood rivals. Melky Cabrera and Jorge Posada connected for three-run homers and the Bombers pounded veteran John Smoltz as the Yankees finally defeated the Red Sox, 13-6, on Thursday at Yankee Stadium. “We are playing a lot better than we were at the beginning,” Posada said. “We are pitching a lot better and doing a lot of things well on the mound and at the plate. Hopefully we can carry on and do what we did today.”

Yankees complete two-game sweep of Blue Jays
TORONTO — After finishing off a two-game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays, the New York Yankees set their sights on beating the Boston Red Sox for the first time this season.
Johnny Damon hit a solo home run and had three RBIs, Nick Swisher also connected and the Yankees beat the Blue Jays 8-4 on Wednesday night. The AL East-leading Yankees, winless in eight games against second-place Boston, return home to open a four-game series against the Red Sox on Thursday night.
