Reggie recalls Munson on anniversary
CHICAGO — On the 30th anniversary of Thurman Munson’s passing, Reggie Jackson’s thoughts were of the Yankees captain, recalling how he had flown in the doomed jet three weeks to the date of the tragic cras
The Yankees had played a night game at Seattle on July 12, 1979, and Munson was proudly showcasing his new Cessna Citation jet around the clubhouse, looking for passengers to accompany him on a flight to Anaheim for a three-game series against the Angels.
Jackson and third baseman Graig Nettles came aboard, buckling into the back of the plane while Munson and an instructor took the cockpit. They made it safely, but the short trip offered a foreboding indication that Munson’s prized plane was not operating perfectly.

The 39-year-old Rivera appears to be all the way back from offseason arthroscopic surgery to shave down an AC joint in his right shoulder, as he iced the White Sox to reach the 30-save plateau for the seventh straight season, tying Trevor Hoffman for the most, all-time.

Sabathia glared into the eyes of his catcher and vowed they would get no more. The ace kept his word, pitching into the eighth inning as the Yankees posted an 8-5 victory on an afternoon when Melky Cabrera hit for the 15th cycle in franchise history.
