Derek Jeter hot on heels of Lou Gehrig’s Yankee hits record
Derek Jeter had two more hits Sunday and is now 12 shy of breaking Lou Gehrig’s club record of 2,721. Jeter was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, pushing his average to .335.
Joe Girardi said he would not manipulate Jeter’s playing time on the Yanks’ seven-game road trip to ensure that Jeter breaks Gehrig’s mark at home. The Yankees play three games in Baltimore beginning Monday and then play four in Toronto before their next home game, a doubleheader against the Rays on Sept. 7.
“No, I won’t,” Girardi said. “The important thing is for us to win games. Jeter’s always been all about winning, doing what it takes. Nothing about his numbers, but wins.”
