Burnett Looks Sharp as He Prepares for First Postseason
Six years ago, A. J. Burnett stood on the field at Yankee Stadium wearing a sweatshirt and a glum expression. His team was preparing for Game 1 of the World Series, but he would not be pitching.
Burnett’s Marlins went on to win the title, beating the Yankees in six games, but he was a spectator, going through his rehabilitation after undergoing reconstructive elbow surgery that April.
“It’s really hard not to be a part of this,” he said that day.
On Tuesday night, after delivering six and a third strong innings in the Yankees’ 4-3 victory over the Royals, Burnett recalled his mixed feelings that October afternoon.
“I remember that,” he said. “It was a workout day, and I wasn’t doing much. I was really happy for the guys, but it was tough. Now I feel like I’ll really be a part of it.”

Yankees’ Gaudin Sharp In Win Over Royals
Robinson Cano capped a five-run seventh inning with a grand slam, Chad Gaudin made a case for a spot on the Yankees’ postseason roster and a makeshift lineup beat the Kansas City Royals 8-2 Monday night for the team’s 101st win
A day after the Yankees secured their first AL East title since 2006, Ramiro Pena hit his first major league home run and Shelley Duncan had a tiebreaking single in the sixth. The Yankees rested most of their regulars for the opener of a three-game series against the Royals, the last AL team to visit the new $1.5 billion Yankee Stadium.
Cano’s second career slam was his 25th homer this season and helped set a franchise record for most players with at least 25 home runs in a season. He joined Mark Teixeira (38), Alex Rodriguez (28), Hideki Matsui (28) and Nick Swisher (27).

Hairston to undergo MRI exam on wrist
Yankees utility man Jerry Hairston Jr. was removed from Wednesday’s 3-2 win at Angel Stadium after feeling a popping sensation in his left wrist and will undergo an MRI examination on Thursday in New York.
Hairston was batting in the seventh inning against right-handed reliever Jason Bulger with New York leading, 3-2, and took a ball from the hurler. He tried a practice swing after the pitch and felt something strange and painful.
“It’s just been bothering me the last three weeks or so,” Hairston said. “It felt really weird. I’ve never had that. I felt something pop and I tried to take another swing and felt kind of a sharp pain. Right now, I’m hoping it’s scar tissue or something I can play through.”
Yankees manager Joe Girardi and head trainer Gene Monahan came onto the field and briefly examined Hairston before the three men walked off the field. In the dugout, Monahan sliced a soft tape wrap off of Hairston’s wrist before disappearing down the dugout tunnel.

A-Rod’s sacrifice fly lifts Yankees past Angels and into playoffs
No champagne. No plastic sheets on the lockers. Just a few handshakes and hugs on the field.
Although the Yankees secured their return to the playoffs Tuesday night after a year away that sometimes felt like an eternity, they haven’t forgotten which clinchers really matter.
Brett Gardner scored the tiebreaking run on Alex Rodriguez’s sacrifice fly in the ninth, and the Yankees got ready for their 14th playoff appearance in 15 seasons Tuesday night with a 6-5 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

Yanks expect more from Chamberlain
With one day to absorb Joba Chamberlain’s last start, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that he saw no reason to administer a reality check to the young hurler. But the club does need to see better results, and in a hurry.
Though he said he was embarrassed by allowing seven runs to the Mariners in Sunday’s three-inning start at Safeco Field — a 7-1 Yankees loss — Chamberlain was relentlessly positive in dissecting his outing, using the word “great” several times and telling reporters his stuff “was all working, surprisingly.”
The comments drew plenty of attention from fans on talk radio and the Internet, but Girardi said on Monday that he believes Chamberlain — who has now lost a career-high four straight decisions — knows that the results are not acceptable.

Will Yankees re-sign Damon?
It might be. Damon has been pretty up front about his desire to keep playing for the Yankees past 2009, and he has said that he can’t imagine wearing a different uniform, which isn’t exactly a page right out of the Scott Boras playbook as it relates to an upcoming free agency.
But Damon seems legitimate and unapologetic about what he wants, and why not? He has absolutely loved hitting in new Yankee Stadium, owning the kind of swing that seems tailor-made for the place — shades of how Bobby Murcer enjoyed so much success at the old building a few decades ago.
Damon might not be the same productive player if he had to log 81 games worth of at-bats in a different stadium, but in the Bronx, he still seems to be a good fit. There was a thought earlier in the year that the Yankees would be primed to let Damon walk as a free agent, but now it appears the winds have shifted and they are more amenable to the idea of keeping him.

Rivera sets sights on postseason run
In his 15 seasons with the New York Yankees, closer Mariano Rivera has savored many October victories, but he also endured the bitterness of postseason defeats. He was the MVP of the 1999 World Series against the Atlanta Braves, for example, but was also the losing pitcher in the Yankees’ heartbreaking loss to the Arizona D-backs in Game 7 of the 2001 Fall Classic.
However, now that the Yankees are once again in position to make the playoffs after being left out in the cold last year for the first time since 1993 (they would have likely made the playoffs in 1994 had the players’ strike not ended the season prematurely), all of those experiences — the good and the bad — are put off to the side. According to Rivera, the only way to look is forward.
“The team’s mentality is to work hard and not think about what’s happened in the past,” said Rivera, who recorded his 500th career save in late June. “You can’t do anything about that. You simply have to work hard to keep going.”

Matsui keeps Sabathia rolling past O’s
These days, feel free to pick a flattering statistic out of a hat. The Yankees hold a .681 winning percentage since the All-Star break, easily the best mark in the bigs. They have scored more than a dozen runs four times this season, winning those games by a combined margin of 61-20. Their starting pitcher for Sunday’s game, CC Sabathia, leads the American League with 17 wins.
Yet perhaps most impressive — or at least up there with all that other black ink — is this: the Yankees have not been swept at home all season, and they have not lost three straight games at their new stadium since the first week of May.
In danger of snapping both streaks on Sunday, New York responded with eight innings of stout baseball and an almost-absurd eighth inning to reinforce its standing. The result was another win for Sabathia, a banner day for Hideki Matsui and a 13-3 blowout of the Baltimore Orioles.
