New York Yankees president Randy Levine tells Brewers owner to ’stop whining’ about payroll

Yankees president Randy Levine has heard it often, but he’s had enough of complaints from small-market owners about payroll disparity.

Milwaukee owner Mark Attanasio was quoted in Monday’s USA Today saying, “We’re struggling to sign (Prince Fielder) and the Yankees infield is making more” than the entire Brewers roster.

“As I’ve said, Mark’s a good friend, but he needs to stop whining and complaining about our player payroll,” Levine told the Daily News. “We play by all the rules, and we always have. We’ve contributed hundreds of millons of dollars in revenue sharing and no one complains when they get the money.

“But use that money to sign your players. Period. As you notice, the complaining always comes from others, not from us.”

Yankees Season Opener

The New York Yankees opened the season with a 7-9 loss to the Red Sox after an uncharacteristically sloppy performance from star pitcher CC Sabathia. The Red Sox’s preseason deals paid off, signing Mike Cameron, Adrian Beltre and Marco Scutaro, who combined went 5 for 9 with 3 RBIs. OBP monster Kevin Youkilis’s three extra-base hits and Dustin Pedroia’s two-run homer sealed the deal for the Yankees, coming back from a 5-7 deficit.

While the Yankees lost, their offseason trade for Curtis Granderson already panned out, who hit a home run in his first at-bat in pinstripes.

While these two teams are no stranger to high scoring affairs, they must be left wondering what the $200M+ payroll afforded to Sabathia and Beckett earned them. The poor outing comes at a bad time for Beckett who is in the middle of negotiating a long-term deal with the Sox. Luckily, one rocky start can’t discredit these aces who will surely show why they are worth the dump truck of money that gets unloaded onto their laps every game.

This matchup is one that will provide excitement for the rest of the season and yesterday’s game was no exception.
