Yanks add depth by acquiring Gaudin
NEW YORK — Poll the Yankees, and they’ll tell you the most significant difference between now and June, between winning and losing, has been their bullpen. And the biggest difference in their bullpen has been the success of Phil Hughes and Alfredo Aceves.
Problem is, having Hughes and Aceves pitch in relief has drained much of the starting pitching depth from their system. And so the Yankees made a move to address that Thursday, acquiring right-handed starter Chad Gaudin from the Padres for a player to be named later.
Gaudin will not immediately assume the fifth starter’s role, but his presence suggests that the struggling Sergio Mitre’s job is not safe. He should join the Yankees at some point during this weekend’s series against the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. “I was surprised, but it’s not the first time it’s happened to me,” Gaudin said. “I’m excited to go to New York. I love to win, and that’s what they do.”

Skid over as Yanks lambaste Sox
NEW YORK — The last time the Yankees had gone this deep into a season without being able to beat the Red Sox, they answered to the “Highlanders” and played home games at Hilltop Park.
It made for a fascinating history lesson, but the Bombers could head home on Thursday knowing they’d put an end to all the questions about losing time and time again to their classic blood rivals. Melky Cabrera and Jorge Posada connected for three-run homers and the Bombers pounded veteran John Smoltz as the Yankees finally defeated the Red Sox, 13-6, on Thursday at Yankee Stadium. “We are playing a lot better than we were at the beginning,” Posada said. “We are pitching a lot better and doing a lot of things well on the mound and at the plate. Hopefully we can carry on and do what we did today.”

Yankees complete two-game sweep of Blue Jays
TORONTO — After finishing off a two-game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays, the New York Yankees set their sights on beating the Boston Red Sox for the first time this season.
Johnny Damon hit a solo home run and had three RBIs, Nick Swisher also connected and the Yankees beat the Blue Jays 8-4 on Wednesday night. The AL East-leading Yankees, winless in eight games against second-place Boston, return home to open a four-game series against the Red Sox on Thursday night.

A-ROD HR DROUGHT RAISING EYEBROWS
TORONTO — Alex Rodriguez can’t win. When the Yankee third baseman slugged six homers in eight May games not long after returning from hip surgery, the critics pointed to a .204 average.
Now that Rodriguez has raised his average from .250 on July 20 to .261 going into tonight’s meeting with the Blue Jays’ Roy Halladay, the fault-finders point to him not homering in 53 at-bats. “I have been driving balls well,” Rodriguez said. “I never worry about [not hitting] home runs. They are the last thing to worry about. As long as I am making good contact.”

Mechanics key to Mitre's effectiveness
TORONTO — For a big league starter, the four days between outings can seem so much longer after a bad one. And such was the case for Sergio Mitre this week after his forgettable three innings on Friday in Chicago.
Rather than sulk, though, Mitre worked. Specifically, he attempted to tweak his mechanics, concentrating on keeping his right arm and his body synchronized. In that manner, Mitre hoped, he could prevent his trademark sinker from flattening out and runs from piling up. “When the ball doesn’t do what it’s supposed to do, I know I’m not doing what I need to do,” Mitre said. “That’s the best way to tell. The ball won’t lie.” Partially because of that outing — one in which he allowed five runs on seven hits — the Yankees pushed Mitre’s start up a day so he could pitch in Wednesday’s series finale in Toronto, rather than Thursday’s opener against the Red Sox.

Pen finishes up first Pettitte win in a month as Yanks rough up Halladay, Jays
TORONTO — Even though the New York Yankees finally were able to hit Roy Halladay, they still don’t enjoy facing the Toronto ace.
Andy Pettitte won for the first time in six starts and Johnny Damon, Mark Teixeira and Hideki Matsui all hit solo shots off Halladay, beating the Blue Jays 5-3 on Tuesday night. “He’s no fun to face,” shortstop Derek Jeter said of Halladay. “The only way you’re going to beat him is you’ve got to get a great start from our staff and Andy did that.”

Yankees get ready to battle with Blue Jays, Red Sox for AL East supremacy
The dog days of August started out fittingly for the Yankees. They will need to bite back this week if they want to hold on to first place.
Having caught their breath Monday with their first day off following 17 consecutive games since the All-Star break, the Bombers return to action Tuesday with the first of two games against the Blue Jays to cap a nine-game road trip.
That is merely the appetizer this week, of course, as the Red Sox and new catcher/first baseman Victor Martinez invade the Bronx on Thursday for a four-game series that could give one of the AL East powerhouses the upper hand in the division entering the final eight weeks of the season.

Yanks hope arms hold up down stretch
NEW YORK — The need that the Yankees had identified as their most pressing — pitching depth — went relatively unaddressed at the Trade Deadline, with no reinforcements to be found at a price they could stomach.
Having fought their way to the top of the American League East by timing their hot streaks well, the Yankees know that holding a first-place flag in August won’t mean much in September. It will be up to their pitching staff to make sure that they can hold opposing teams at bay, particularly the Red Sox, against whom they enter the second half still staring at a winless record in eight tries so far this season.
