Javier Vazquez can’t catch a break!
Yesterday afternoon, Vazquez pitched the first game of the Yankees day-night doubleheader in Detroit. Vazquez has struggled all season long coming into yesterday’s game with a 9.78 ERA. After being skipped in his last start against the Red Sox, Vazquez had an opportunity to redeem himself against the Tigers.
Vazquez showed why the Yankees traded for him by only allowing one hit over the first five innings. In the sixth inning Vazquez ran into a little trouble allowing two runs to score, but that was all the runs the Tigers scored in the game.
Vazquez wound up going seven innings allowing two runs on five hits. If it wasn’t for the stellar pitching of 21 year old Rick Porcello of the Tigers, Vazquez would have recorded his second win of the season. Porcello went seven innings of shutout baseball. Perry came in for the eighth to secure the hold for Jose Valverde who came away with his tenth save.
This was the first time the Yankees lost by a shutout all season and it is the first time they lost three games in a row this season. The only positive the Yankees can take from their loss is that Vazquez was finally back to himself. If he keeps on pitching like he did yesterday, his wins will eventually pick up and their rotation will be solid from top to bottom. (mlb.com) (yankees.com)

New York Yankees president Randy Levine tells Brewers owner to ’stop whining’ about payroll
Yankees president Randy Levine has heard it often, but he’s had enough of complaints from small-market owners about payroll disparity.
Milwaukee owner Mark Attanasio was quoted in Monday’s USA Today saying, “We’re struggling to sign (Prince Fielder) and the Yankees infield is making more” than the entire Brewers roster.
“As I’ve said, Mark’s a good friend, but he needs to stop whining and complaining about our player payroll,” Levine told the Daily News. “We play by all the rules, and we always have. We’ve contributed hundreds of millons of dollars in revenue sharing and no one complains when they get the money.
“But use that money to sign your players. Period. As you notice, the complaining always comes from others, not from us.”

Rodriguez ‘at ease’ with Galea
Alex Rodriguez says he is “at ease, no matter what” with his relationship with a Canadian sports doctor embroiled in a cross-border drug smuggling investigation involving human growth hormone and another drug.
Rodriguez told reporters Tuesday at the Yankees spring training complex that he still does not know when he will be interviewed by federal authorities. The slugger said last week he was “aware” of the investigation and plans to cooperate with the government.
When asked if he is choosing not to talk or has been told not to speak, Rodriguez laughed and says he “thinks the latter.”

Joba wants to start in 2010
Unless he’s told otherwise, Joba Chamberlain anticipates being in the Yankees’ starting rotation in 2010.
Sure, he knows there’s never any guarantees. At least as a member of the World Series champions, Chamberlain has a shorter off-season – meaning less time to consider the winter what-ifs.
He’s already been receiving text messages and calls about the Hot Stove League.
“[It's] not so much the rumors part of things [I pay attention to], just kind of the way things are going to shape up, what’s going to happen and just the overall feel of [it],” Chamberlain said Tuesday afternoon.

Matsui’s bat drives Yankees to 27th World Series crown
The New York Yankees bolted from the dugout even before the last grounder was scooped up. After waiting nine years for championship No. 27, no one would dare hold them back.
“It feels better than I remember it, man,” captain Derek Jeter said. “It’s been a long time.”
Hideki Matsui tied a World Series record with six RBIs, Andy Pettitte won on short rest and New York beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-3 in Game 6 on Wednesday night, finally seizing that elusive title — the most in all of sports.
Paint the town in pinstripes! Nearly a decade after their dynasty ended on a blooper in the desert, the Yankees are baseball’s best again.
Matsui, the Series MVP, powered a quick rout of old foe Pedro Martinez. And when Mariano Rivera got the final out, it was ecstasy in the Bronx for George Steinbrenner’s go-for-broke bunch.

Rodriguez’s double in ninth gives Yanks 3-1 World Series lead
Alex Rodriguez waited all game long for this hit. Heck, he waited his whole life. The New York Yankees have been waiting, too.
Rodriguez delivered a go-ahead, two-out double in the ninth inning off Brad Lidge and the Yankees took advantage of Johnny Damon’s daring dash to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-4 on Sunday night for a 3-1 lead in the World Series.
“There’s no question — I’ve never had a bigger hit,” Rodriguez said.
Derek Jeter came through again and Mariano Rivera finished it off as the Yankees moved within one win of that elusive 27th championship and first since 2000.
Rodriguez applauded his own hit, for good reason. Seething since the first inning after again being nailed by a pitch, the highest-paid player in the majors struck back with his potent black bat.

Matsui’s blast sends Series to Philadelphia all tied up
Mark Teixeira and Hideki Matsui shook the New York Yankees from their lumber slumber and sent the World Series to Philadelphia all tied up.
Teixeira and Matsui hit solo homers off familiar foe Pedro Martinez, backing a sharp performance by A.J. Burnett and giving the Yankees a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 2 on Thursday night.
“After yesterday, getting a win today was big,” Teixeira said.
A night after getting stopped by Cliff Lee in the opener 6-1, the Yanks bounced back from an early deficit, sparked by a pickoff throw from backup catcher Jose Molina, and won in the Series for the first time since taking a 2-1 lead against Florida in 2003.

A-Rod says goodbye to October hex
Derek Jeter was on second base with two outs in the first inning when Alex Rodriguez left him there by flying out to right. But Rodriguez wasn’t unhappy with his turn at the plate.
Rodriguez hit it “good” a few times in last night’s 7-2 Game 1 win over the Twins in the first playoff game at the new Stadium, as he finally started delivering in a Yankees playoff game. He had a pair of run-scoring singles, including a critical one in the Bombers’ game-clinching fifth-inning rally.
On that one, Rodriguez laced an RBI single to left, then scored on Hideki Matsui’s two-run homer, part of the Yankees’ three-run inning. Later in the seventh, he smacked an RBI single off the right-field wall.
