Matsui’s bat drives Yankees to 27th World Series crown
The New York Yankees bolted from the dugout even before the last grounder was scooped up. After waiting nine years for championship No. 27, no one would dare hold them back.
“It feels better than I remember it, man,” captain Derek Jeter said. “It’s been a long time.”
Hideki Matsui tied a World Series record with six RBIs, Andy Pettitte won on short rest and New York beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-3 in Game 6 on Wednesday night, finally seizing that elusive title — the most in all of sports.
Paint the town in pinstripes! Nearly a decade after their dynasty ended on a blooper in the desert, the Yankees are baseball’s best again.
Matsui, the Series MVP, powered a quick rout of old foe Pedro Martinez. And when Mariano Rivera got the final out, it was ecstasy in the Bronx for George Steinbrenner’s go-for-broke bunch.

Matsui’s blast sends Series to Philadelphia all tied up
Mark Teixeira and Hideki Matsui shook the New York Yankees from their lumber slumber and sent the World Series to Philadelphia all tied up.
Teixeira and Matsui hit solo homers off familiar foe Pedro Martinez, backing a sharp performance by A.J. Burnett and giving the Yankees a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 2 on Thursday night.
“After yesterday, getting a win today was big,” Teixeira said.
A night after getting stopped by Cliff Lee in the opener 6-1, the Yanks bounced back from an early deficit, sparked by a pickoff throw from backup catcher Jose Molina, and won in the Series for the first time since taking a 2-1 lead against Florida in 2003.

Matsui keeps Sabathia rolling past O’s
These days, feel free to pick a flattering statistic out of a hat. The Yankees hold a .681 winning percentage since the All-Star break, easily the best mark in the bigs. They have scored more than a dozen runs four times this season, winning those games by a combined margin of 61-20. Their starting pitcher for Sunday’s game, CC Sabathia, leads the American League with 17 wins.
Yet perhaps most impressive — or at least up there with all that other black ink — is this: the Yankees have not been swept at home all season, and they have not lost three straight games at their new stadium since the first week of May.
In danger of snapping both streaks on Sunday, New York responded with eight innings of stout baseball and an almost-absurd eighth inning to reinforce its standing. The result was another win for Sabathia, a banner day for Hideki Matsui and a 13-3 blowout of the Baltimore Orioles.
