Could the Yankees be in a slump?
The New York Yankees lost three out of four to the Detroit Tigers to lose their second series of the season.
Injuries may be the main reason for New York’s mini-slump. Nick Swisher did not play in the series finale because of a sore bicep. Swisher should be back for their series against the Minnesota Twins starting tomorrow.
Lack of offense was definitely the key to the Yankees demise in Detroit. That lack of offense may be directly linked to all the injuries the Yankees have. The Yankees lineup for the last game featured Juan Miranda at first base because Teixiera needed a rest and because Nick Johnson is on the disabled list, Greg Golson in right field(who only has one major league hit) filling in for Swisher, and Randy Winn was in left field who has been getting more playing time due to Curtis Granderson’s stint on the DL.
The Yankees had their first shutout loss of the season in the second game of the Detroit series and then their second quickly after in the last game of the series.
The Yankees have a tough task ahead of them facing the Twins in the first three games of the seven game home stand which also features the Red Sox and Rays. A.J. Burnett is looking to rebound after his abysmal start in Boston tomorrow. Burnett is going to have to be flawless if the Yankees continue to hit the way they are.
The Yankees are still sitting in second place in the American League East, two games behind the Rays. Toronto and Boston are starting to creep up in the standing, the Blue Jays are now only three games behind the Yankees and Boston is four and a half behind the Yankees. The AL East looks like it is going to be a four team race this year. (yankees.com) (mlb.com)
